Engineers at Nvidia, he notes, “are using the same exponential growth today as they did with relays in 1939,” and somehow keep landing on the same curve without looking at it.

The trouble is that human intuition is built for straight lines. Think of it like footsteps. Thirty normal steps gets you about 75 feet. Thirty doubling steps — where each step is twice the last — gets you roughly half a million miles, far enough to reach the moon and bounce back. His older version of the same point is the chessboard fable: a grain of rice on the first square, doubled each square after, and by the end you’ve buried the planet, oceans included, in rice several times over. People nod along to “exponential growth” and then quietly keep imagining a straight line anyway. That gap, Kurzweil says, is the whole reason his predictions looked insane and then kept coming true.

Average real income has risen tenfold over a century through automation, he says; AI extends the trend, society gets far wealthier, and a universal basic income — picture today’s food stamps, scaled up and made less clumsy — keeps a floor under everyone. The national debt looks frightening, but if AI-driven productivity grows GDP fast enough, the debt-to-GDP ratio improves on its own. His advice to a young person is no longer “study software” (the safe-job era is over) but: find what you’re passionate about and pursue it with these tools, expecting to be largely self-educated.

One sharp note of dissent breaks the optimism. On quantum computing, Kurzweil is a skeptic — rare for a man who forecasts almost everything as imminent. The promise is factoring huge numbers to break encryption, “but they’ve never ever done that,” the output is riddled with errors no one can clear, and the progress reports “don’t really make any sense.” He doesn’t think it will work — and crucially, his AGI timeline assumes none of it.

The interview’s final stretch is Robbins, not Kurzweil.
