The interview opens with a simple question — how much are you sleeping? — and Dario Amodei answers it with physics. Imagine you are on a spaceship accelerating away from Earth fast enough that time bends. You sleep one night; two Earth-days pass. You sleep again; three pass. Then four. That, he says, is what running Anthropic feels like from the inside.

This is the spine of the whole conversation, so it is worth slowing down on. An “exponential” just means growth that compounds — each step is a multiple of the last, not an addition. The trick of compounding is that for a long time it looks flat and boring, and then it goes vertical.

“Nothing’s happening, nothing’s happening, nothing’s happening. A little things happen and then zoom, it goes crazy.”

He claims he saw Anthropic becoming the highest-revenue, highest-valuation AI company coming “some time around this time” — just a line on a graph he had been watching. Not surprising in the abstract, he says, and yet vivid and strange when it actually arrives.

The OpenAI split, and why he won’t relitigate it

Amodei co-founded Anthropic after leaving OpenAI, and the interviewer pushes on the famous breakup. His answer draws a clean line. Disagreements about safety are normal — people inside Anthropic disagree with him every day, he says, and that alone is never a reason to leave. What breaks a partnership is something else:

“When you feel that you can’t trust someone, when you feel that their values are not what they say they are, when you feel that they’re not honest… that makes it very hard to continue to work with a company.”

He declines to feed the drama. The resolution, in his telling, is undramatic: you stop arguing, you go build your own thing, and you let the market and public opinion decide. (He also bats away the viral non-handshake with Sam Altman at India’s AI summit as nothing more than a disorganized photo-op where Narendra Modi suddenly told everyone to hold hands.)

Race to the top, not race to the bottom

A recurring idea: Amodei wants to win not to crush rivals but to drag the whole industry upward. He calls it the “race to the top.” Think of it like a class where the strongest student keeps raising the bar — others either copy the good behavior to keep up (the carrot) or look bad for refusing (the stick).

“There’s like the positive version of it where you inspire other people… Then there’s the stick side where you’re like, okay, these guys are doing the right thing. Those guys will look bad if they don’t do the right thing.”

He insists, against the popular “nobody trusts anyone” narrative, that he has known Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis for fifteen years, buys compute from Google, and swaps safety ideas with competitors. The plan: get the trustworthy players to set standards the untrustworthy ones are then forced to adopt.

Why he bet on boring enterprise instead of viral consumer apps

While rivals chased flashy consumer apps, Anthropic went after coding and enterprise. Amodei frames this as values and business pointing the same way. The consumer-attention model — social media, AI video “slop” — is built to maximize minutes-of-attention for ad revenue, which he sees as engineered addiction. Enterprise runs on a different fuel: trust built over years. And almost every good thing he can imagine AI doing — curing disease, cheaper energy, education, growth — happens through enterprises (pharma, biotech, universities, nonprofits).

“If you pick a business model that fundamentally conflicts with your values… either you betray your own values or you become irrelevant.”

On the “SaaSpocalypse” — the $285 billion in software market value that vanished after Claude Cowork launched — his read is nuanced. The moat of “we wrote complex code nobody else can write” is gone. But customer relationships, domain know-how, and trust survive. His advice to incumbents: list your moats, accept that some will evaporate, lean into the ones that remain. And counterintuitively, he thinks the software pie gets bigger, not smaller — if AI makes 10x more possible, even a lagging incumbent can grow 1.5x. There will still be big losers: the ones who put their heads in the sand.

The compute crunch, explained honestly

On reports of server strain and users running out of tokens, Amodei gives an unusually candid number. Anthropic planned for compute to grow 10x in a year. But in the first quarter of 2026, revenue grew more than 3x in a single quarter — which, compounded, would be roughly 80x a year. Planning for 80x would have been irrational (if you only got 10x, you’d have eight times too much capacity). So they are in a “locally extreme” spike that can’t last, scrambling to buy more compute from Google and Amazon. It might just take a month or two, he says, because the compute market is liquid for anyone who can actually use it.

Jobs: the warning he says keeps getting clipped

This is the most heated stretch. Amodei is famous for warning that AI could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar jobs in one to five years. He’s exhausted by how the line travels:

“Somehow there’s this tendency in the human psychology to clip the three seconds of like, doom is coming. So my message is just definitely not doom is coming.”

His actual model: AI first makes workers more productive (automate 90% of a job and the human becomes 10x more leveraged on the rest), but eventually it creeps toward 100% and you have to find people something else to do. He points to his own company — software engineers at Anthropic, where AI now writes nearly all the code, are still more productive, but some are reaching the point where it’s simply better to let the AI do the whole task. Meanwhile demand explodes for “forward-deployed engineers” who mix coding with talking to customers. The mismatch is the problem: it won’t be one-to-one.

His fear is a strange combination — fast GDP growth alongside high unemployment, underemployment, and inequality. When the interviewer asks “isn’t that how revolutions start?”, he agrees flatly: that is the outcome they are trying to prevent. The escape valves he sees are the physical world (robotics lags AI, so manufacturing and building stay human for a while), human-relationship jobs (people want to talk to humans about things that matter), and humans directing the AIs. He’s blunt that he doesn’t know which way it nets out.

He pushes back hard on the “doom marketing” accusation (Nvidia’s Jensen Huang said he’s “conflating tasks with jobs”). His retort is sharp:

“The idea that this is cheap marketing is itself cheap marketing. This is laziness, this is failure to engage with serious intellectual work.”

The military contracts and a school in Iran

The hardest section. Anthropic — and Amodei, a longtime anti-war voice since his Caltech days — was among the first AI firms to sign with the Department of Defense and to run on classified networks. His justification: the world changed. Russia in Ukraine, China eyeing Taiwan, a “resurgent authoritarian bloc” that democracies must be able to deter. He says they didn’t do it for money (government networks are “a huge pain” for little revenue) but out of conviction — and that conviction is exactly why they drew red lines: no mass surveillance, no fully autonomous weapons.

“It’s not worth democracies winning if democracies do those things.”

Then the interviewer lands the heaviest blow: Bloomberg reported Claude was used in AI-assisted targeting (via Palantir’s Maven system) in the war in Iran, and that a US missile hit a girls’ school in February, killing more than 150 people, mostly children. Did Claude play a role?

Amodei says he doesn’t have access to how the models were used and can’t know. He calls the strike genuinely terrible. His argument pivots to the principle he fought for: a human makes the final call, not the AI. The horror of that mistake, he argues, is precisely why fully autonomous weapons — which “almost every other company now” permits — must be prevented. He invokes Dr. Strangelove: a doomsday device that fires automatically is how accidents become catastrophes. On net he still believes superior AI-driven intelligence deters war more than it causes it — but only with limits.

He also flatly denies working with ICE, CBP, or in Gaza, directly or through Palantir.

Mythos: the model too dangerous to ship

Anthropic’s latest model, Mythos, can autonomously walk the entire “cyber kill chain” — the full sequence of steps an attacker takes to break into a system. What surprised Amodei wasn’t just that it finds vulnerabilities (holes in software), but that it reliably turns them into working exploits (actual break-in tools). Outside firms they previewed it to reportedly said:

“This is a super weapon. You should have to own a gun license to use it. Please don’t release this.”

The plan is to give it to defenders first, so they can patch holes before attackers get the same power — Amodei argues the attack surface is finite, so you can eventually patch enough to make systems genuinely hard to crack. He rejects the “grand PR play” accusation, noting Mythos found 271 new vulnerabilities in Firefox that the previous model missed, and says not releasing it has “hurt us enormously commercially.” The government (Treasury, the Chief of Staff) is now slowing the rollout over counterintelligence risk, which he calls sensible.

Who should hold the leash

Amodei concedes a genuinely uncomfortable point: every prior world-changing technology — nuclear weapons, the internet, GPS, cell phones — originated with government. AI is the first built almost entirely in the private sector, with government arriving late. He calls that “dangerous and unstable” but says there’s no alternative, because the tech will get built regardless. His answer is checks and balances everywhere: Anthropic’s “long-term benefit trust” (a body that can appoint and remove the board majority — and thus, threaded through, fire him), plus real government regulation including mandatory pre-release testing and auditing of models.

He saves particular scorn for the Silicon Valley crowd who fought all regulation as innovation-killing, then panicked at the first real danger and started demanding nationalization:

“You’re yo-yoing from the most extreme anti-regulatory… to this completely communist, the government should grab it all. We need a more sensible, moderate approach.”

Oppenheimer, China, and the odds

Asked if he sees himself as Oppenheimer, Amodei says no — he identifies with Leo Szilard, the physicist who first conceived the nuclear chain reaction. And he frames Oppenheimer as a failure case: a larger-than-life figure at the center of everything is exactly what we shouldn’t have. The only good ending comes from distributed checks and balances.

On China, his real fear isn’t competitive — it’s a “high-tech authoritarian state” (the Uyghurs, Hong Kong, the CCP reaching into US business to suppress criticism) fused with AI, producing “1984 or worse.” He wants AI to be a pro-democracy technology instead.

Pressed on his own estimate of a 10–25% chance of civilizational collapse, he reaches for an airline analogy: his company can be ten times safer than the others and still be unable to guarantee no crash. The interviewer’s counter lands cleanly — you wouldn’t board a plane with a 25% crash chance. He agrees: 25% is too high, and lowering it is the goal.

Why trust him at all

His closing argument is that distrust is the rational starting point — Silicon Valley has burned the world’s trust and has to re-earn it through actions, not words. His evidence: cutting off model access to China at a cost of hundreds of millions when that was a big share of revenue, delaying Claude’s early releases, and now holding back Mythos despite the commercial pain.

“Look at the overall history and say… what is the hypothesis about us that is most consistent with that overall history?”

He admits the company is imperfect, full of “foot faults,” but insists the honest read is that they’re genuinely trying to do the right thing. The interview ends, almost comically, with him admitting the most surprising part of the CEO job: how often he has to wear makeup.

That said, the substance holds up better than the average AI-hype interview. The compute math is specific and falsifiable. The jobs argument (productivity hump, then absorption, then a matching problem) is more careful than the clipped soundbite. And the costly-signal defense — withholding Mythos, cutting China access — is at least a real cost, not just rhetoric.
