The man who couldn’t stop thinking about time

Herbert George Wells was born in 1866 into genteel poverty in Bromley, Kent. His father was a struggling professional cricketer who ran a failing crockery shop; his mother had been a lady’s maid. At seven, Wells broke his leg, and during the bedridden recovery his father fed him library books. He read about geology, deep time, evolution — and came out of it permanently obsessed with where things were going next.

Pulled out of school at thirteen and shoved into a draper’s shop, he refused the ceiling that implied. A letter to a former headmaster got him a pupil-teacher post, then a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in South Kensington, where he studied under Thomas Huxley — Darwin’s most famous public defender.

This is where the method was born. Evolutionary biology trains you to look at a current form and trace it backwards to its origins. Wells simply ran the tape the other way. If you can reconstruct the past from present evidence, why not project the future from present pressures?

He had predicted it the way a physicist predicts where a thrown ball will land — by understanding the forces involved and tracing their probable trajectories.

The book that shouldn’t have been writable

In 1908 Wells wrote The War in the Air. Powered flight was five years old. No aircraft could carry a weapon or cross an ocean. Yet Wells described a surprise aerial assault on New York, German airships firebombing civilians, defenses made irrelevant because an enemy that moves through the sky ignores forts and navies, and — crucially — the economic collapse: stock exchanges closing, credit seizing, supply chains breaking within weeks.

Think of his core insight like discovering that a moat only stops things that can’t fly. For centuries Britain’s defense was simply being an island. Aircraft quietly deleted that advantage. The first Zeppelin raid on London in 1915 killed seven people — trivial in body count, enormous in meaning. For the first time since 1066, England’s geography had failed to protect its civilians. When the war broke out in 1914, the London, New York, Paris and Berlin exchanges all suspended trading within days, exactly as he’d sketched.

He didn’t stop at the war. He described the aftermath — a world too broken to simply reassemble, regional conflicts in the gaps where authority collapsed, displaced populations in improvised camps. He was describing the interwar period. He wrote it in 1908.

Why nobody believed him

This is the part worth sitting with. In 1908 a major European war looked unlikely to informed people. In 1910 the economist Norman Angell published The Great Illusion, a bestseller arguing — quite intelligently — that war between the great powers had become impossible because they were too financially intertwined to profit from it. Two years later, the war began.

Angell’s analysis wasn’t wrong about economics. It was wrong about who makes the decision. War wasn’t chosen by economists weighing costs; it was chosen by people locked inside alliance obligations, national-honor narratives, and historical grievances that don’t respond to a spreadsheet. Wells, trained to think in ecological and structural terms rather than rational-actor terms, saw the rigid alliance system as a machine where one trigger — an assassinated archduke in a city most Europeans couldn’t find on a map — would activate the whole thing.

Danzig, named seven years early

In 1933 Wells published The Shape of Things to Come, framed as a history written from 2106. The framing let him be specific. He wrote that the second great war would begin around 1940, ignited by a dispute over Danzig — a free city under League of Nations administration, claimed by both Poland and Germany. The actual war began September 1939, over Germany’s invasion of Poland, with Danzig (now Gdansk) at the center of the dispute. He was off by roughly a year on timing, dead-on about the trigger. He also described it as a war fought by aerial bombardment with the civilian/soldier distinction erased, plus an unprecedented refugee crisis — all of which arrived.

A world brain in 1937

At the Royal Institution in 1937, Wells described what he called a “world brain” or “world encyclopedia.” Read his requirements now: permanent and continuously updated, universally accessible regardless of location or status, interconnected so you can follow a chain of inquiry from any point to any other rather than alphabetically, collaboratively produced by specialists, decentralized across many locations, and searchable from any entry point.

That is a description of hyperlinks, Wikipedia, and Google — written 52 years before Tim Berners-Lee proposed the web at CERN and 64 before Wikipedia launched.

His diagnosis of why it was needed is the sharp part: the 20th century’s problem wasn’t a shortage of knowledge but a crisis of knowledge management. The information to solve most problems already existed; it was just fragmented, siloed, and locked behind specializations and physical locations. Where he was wrong — and the video is honest about this — is the assumption that giving everyone accurate information would let truth crowd out falsehood. The actual internet democratized access and turbocharged manipulation, because an attention economy rewards novelty and tribal confirmation over accuracy.

The forgotten hits

The big three (two wars, the internet) get the headlines, but the longer list is what turns “lucky guesser” into “method.” In The World Set Free (1914) he described an “atomic bomb” — coining the phrase — as a weapon with a self-sustaining chain reaction and persistent radiation, decades before fission was understood. This one is documented: physicist Leo Szilard read it in 1932 and credited it with shaping his thinking on the chain reaction. In The Land Ironclads (1903) he described tanks, and tank-program figure Ernest Swinton acknowledged the influence. Anticipations (1901) sketched motorways, suburban sprawl, home delivery replacing high-street shops (the economic logic of Amazon), and the decline of coal heating.

The last prediction

Underneath every specific guess, the video argues, Wells was making one argument for sixty years: the nation-state is a temporary form of organization, suited to a particular stage of technology, and that stage is ending. The forces industrialization has released — total war, the bomb, the global economy, now climate change and AI — are too big for competing nation-states to govern. So either humanity builds genuine global governance, or the forces produce a catastrophe large enough to force it.

He expected the atomic bomb to force world government, the way it does in his 1914 novel. Instead the bomb produced something he didn’t predict: deterrence. A substitute for governance — managing the forces without building the institutions. It held for 80 years, but partly on luck. In 1962 a Soviet submarine officer, Vasily Arkhipov, refused to authorize a nuclear torpedo when his two colleagues had agreed. In 1983 Stanislav Petrov correctly ignored an early-warning system showing an incoming US strike. In both cases the official protocol pointed toward catastrophe and a single human’s deviation prevented it.

In his final book, Mind at the End of Its Tether (1945), Wells — who had been an optimist his whole life — admitted he was no longer certain humanity would make it. The video’s closing move is to apply his own method to now: climate change, AI capability races, and a fragmented information environment as the live “driving forces,” with the open question being whether governance capacity is growing fast enough to stay ahead. He thought it could. He wasn’t sure it would. He died in 1946 without finding out.

The video isn’t fabricating its spine. For a sleepy-history channel, the factual foundation is unusually solid, and the central idea — that Wells forecast by structure rather than intuition — is a fair and interesting reading.

That said, the format inflates. This is roughly a long magazine essay’s worth of content stretched to 2.5 hours by repetition; the same handful of phrases (“the structure rather than the surface,” “the forces requiring governance,” “follow the trajectory honestly”) recur dozens of times as filler. More substantively, the specificity gets oversold in places. The claim that Anticipations (1901) described anthropogenic climate change is generous — Wells touched on coal and industry, but the crisp “basic physical mechanism of climate change” framing is the narrator reading 2020s knowledge backward into a vaguer text (Arrhenius had done the actual science in 1896, which the video admits). The biggest stretch is The Shape of Things to Come supposedly predicting, in detail, both Pax Americana and China’s specific state-directed-capitalism model challenging it in the 2020s. That book is a sprawling, often wrong future-history (it predicted a decades-long plague and an “Air Dictatorship” world government that obviously didn’t happen) — cherry-picking the hits while ignoring the misses is exactly the survivorship bias that makes any prophet look better than they were. The video never mentions what Wells got wrong, which is the tell.

The “method” framing also does some quiet sleight of hand: by establishing a flawless track record (with the misses edited out), it lends borrowed authority to the unfalsifiable “last prediction.” That final bit — governance vs. forces — is less a prediction than a restatement of every serious person’s worry about climate, nukes and AI, dressed in Wells’s coat.
