The man who took two revolutions seriously

Carlo Rovelli stumbled into physics almost by accident — he picked it as a university major in 1970s Italy because he “didn’t know what to do,” then fell hard for two theories that, he says, told him the world “is not the way we look at it. It’s profoundly different.” That was exactly what he wanted: something other than the ordinary world around him.

The two theories were quantum mechanics and Einstein’s general relativity. And here’s the thing that set the course of his life: nobody had managed to fit them together. Relativity says space and time aren’t a fixed stage — they bend and stretch, they’re things in their own right. Quantum mechanics says the very small world is grainy and probabilistic. Combine them and you get the unsolved problem Rovelli has chased for decades, called loop quantum gravity — the idea that space and time themselves come in tiny indivisible grains, like the universe is pixelated at the smallest scale.

His method is deliberately stubborn. Instead of inventing exotic new ingredients — extra dimensions, tiny vibrating strings, parallel universes — he says: we’ve already discovered two true things. Let’s just take them completely seriously and follow where they lead.

The big idea: things don’t have properties, relationships do

Here is the heart of everything, and it’s worth going slowly.

Imagine you want to describe an electron. You can’t actually say anything about it “by itself.” Everything you know about it is how it affects something else — how it kicks a detector, how it bends in a field. Rovelli’s claim is that this isn’t a limitation of our instruments. It’s how reality is built. The electron doesn’t secretly have a position it’s hiding from us. It only has a position when it interacts with something.

This is relational quantum mechanics, the interpretation Rovelli has developed since the 1990s. Think of it like this. We tend to picture the world as a box of objects, each one carrying its own list of fixed properties — this ball is red, here, spinning this way. Rovelli says scrap that picture. The world is more like a web of interactions, and the “properties” only flash into being at the points where threads of the web touch. Between touches, the question “where is it really?” simply has no answer.

He’s careful to kill a common misunderstanding: this has nothing to do with human consciousness magically collapsing reality. We humans are just more stuff, no different from a rock or a detector. The point isn’t that observers are special — it’s that interactions are where reality gets its values, and any physical system counts as an “observer” for any other.

Why a “view from nowhere” is a fake question

If properties are always relative to some other system, then a single absolute, complete, god’s-eye description of the universe — the one true story of how everything “really” is — doesn’t exist. Not because it’s hidden, but because the idea doesn’t mean anything.

Rovelli pushes hard on the word “really.” Point at a table. Is it really a table? Well, it’s really a swarm of atoms. Is that the real one? You can keep going, but there’s no bottom floor labelled “the ultimate truth.” Each description is a perspective, and your best knowledge of the table isn’t any single one — it’s as many of them as you can hold at once: the carpenter’s, the geologist’s, the molecule’s, the quantum measurement’s.

He reaches for a 1,800-year-old Buddhist philosopher, Nāgārjuna, who used the word emptiness. It sounds like “nothing exists,” but it means almost the opposite: nothing exists independently. Everything exists only by leaning on something else. And then Nāgārjuna does something Rovelli loves — he turns the idea on itself: emptiness is also empty. Even “everything is relational” isn’t the final secret truth. If you treat it as the bottom floor, you’ve made the same mistake all over again. The answer to “what is ultimate reality?” is that the question is broken.

Love, chocolate, and the equality of all things

So why “love and quantum physics are the same”? Because both are just reality happening, describable from many angles, with no privileged version. Falling in love can be told as poetry, as brain chemistry, as hormones, as neurology — none is the “true” one, they’re different languages for the same event.

But Rovelli refuses the lazy reduction “love is just chemistry.” His rebuttal is sharp: a glass of water is also just chemistry. Saying “it’s all chemistry” explains nothing, because it doesn’t distinguish the dull case from the extraordinary one. The interesting question is what’s specifically going on — and the language of chemistry runs out long before it can capture being in love. You need other languages, other levels. There’s no metaphysical wall between the levels, but there’s also no single level that says it all.

Dissolving consciousness — and renaming the “hard problem”

The philosopher David Chalmers split consciousness into an “easy problem” (explaining all the mechanics of perception and behaviour) and a “hard problem” (why there’s a felt quality to it — what red is like, what chocolate tastes like). Rovelli thinks the names are backwards. The “easy” problem is staggeringly hard. And the “hard” problem? He thinks it’s a false problem. What is the quale of tasting chocolate? It’s just whatever happens in you when you taste chocolate, and nothing more. The riddle, in Wittgenstein’s spirit, dissolves: there is no riddle.

He’s allergic to “essence” questions. Is self-reflection essential to consciousness? That’s like asking whether a cover is essential to a book — purely a choice about where to stick a label, not a discovery about the world. His cat has rich awareness and emotion but doesn’t sit around brooding on its own identity. “Consciousness” isn’t one thing; it’s a confused bundle we should pull apart into many studiable pieces.

And the self? Rovelli thinks there’s no ultimate, metaphysical self — an idea he, like Buddhism, finds liberating rather than bleak. The “me” is just this lump of flesh thinking and doing things, with a strong sense of unity for two practical reasons: a body can’t be split in half, and a brain swamped with competing demands needs one central place to arbitrate decisions. He even frames it as engineering: if you programmed a robot to wander and act, you’d give it a routine that says “think about yourself and stay consistent.” That routine is the self. Much of his sense of “me,” he adds, is social — built out of how his mother, friends, lovers and enemies see him, reflected back and forth.

Meaning and agency, built from physics with no magic

How do you get meaning out of a universe of dumb particles? Rovelli’s answer comes in two moves.

First, information is just correlation. If two coins on a table must land opposite — one heads forces the other tails — then looking at one tells you the other. That’s all “information” means here: knowing one thing tells you about another. The universe is drowning in these correlations.

Second, meaning is correlation that helps you survive. A living thing is a system that reproduces and persists. So when a falling rock’s position is correlated with a pattern in your head that makes you jump aside, that particular correlation has survival value — and that’s what makes it meaningful, as opposed to random. No magic ingredient gets added; meaning emerges when correlation meets Darwin.

Agency gets the same treatment. When you agonise all night over a job offer, people say “it’s not really you deciding, it’s just a process in your brain.” Rovelli’s reply: but I am that process. Understanding how a decision happens doesn’t make the decision an illusion. When Copernicus showed the sun doesn’t move, he didn’t abolish sunsets — a sunset is still a sunset, just not what we thought it was. Free will, agency, consciousness: real words for real things, only understood better in terms of other things.

Why time has an arrow — twice over

Last, the deepest part. The fundamental laws of physics don’t care about the direction of time; run them backwards and they’re equally happy. So why does our world have such a stubborn arrow — eggs break but never unbreak, we remember the past but not the future, causes come before effects?

The standard answer is entropy: the universe started in a very special, low-entropy state, and disorder has been growing ever since. Eggs break because there are vastly more ways to be a broken egg than an intact one. Fine.

But Rovelli adds a subtler twist that he clearly relishes. The arrow of time isn’t only out there in the world — it’s also in us. We are entropy-producing engines. We soak up low-entropy sunlight and radiate waste heat; thinking literally heats your head, like friction, because thought is an entropy-raising process. Because we are oriented in time, we read time-orientation into the world. So phenomena like cause and agency have a double source of their arrow: the world is oriented, and the describer is oriented. Imagine a far-future universe at perfect equilibrium, all heat evenly spread. People object: “but I’d still feel time passing.” Rovelli’s answer: no — at equilibrium your neurons couldn’t fire, you couldn’t record or think at all. No thinker, no felt time. The confusion about time, he says, comes from missing this second, internal source. We are part of nature, not observers perched outside it — burning candles, like the sun.

The defensible philosophy: His information-as-correlation and meaning-as-survival-value story is clean and unoriginal in the best way — it’s the mainstream naturalist position, stated unusually well. His Wittgenstein-flavoured dissolving of the “hard problem” of consciousness is a real philosophical stance, but here I’d flag the reach: he asserts the hard problem is a “false problem” more than he argues it. Plenty of sharp philosophers think the felt quality of experience is exactly the thing that doesn’t dissolve by being renamed, and Rovelli rather waves it away. Take that part as a confident opinion, not a result.

The poetic stretch: “Love and quantum physics are the same” is podcast-title alchemy. What he actually means — both are reality described from multiple non-privileged angles — is reasonable; the equals sign is marketing. And the Nāgārjuna parallel is suggestive and sincere, but it’s analogy, not proof; a 2nd-century logician anticipating relational QM is a lovely resonance, not evidence for it.
